25 Jul '07 5:25 pm Wow I really appreciate everyones help. We went today and purchased two climbing 5 gallon New Dawns. We finished the garden paths today and should be ready to plant in a day or two. I am attaching a pic of the area, the garden paths we made and the white arbor. I will try to post another pic of the garden when we have planted the roses, etc. Thanks again
Nice photo of your arbor. Can't wait to see it planted up
One thing I would check on, well two actually, the first is the shade pattern of that fabulous pine tree. Roses like sun. About 5-6 hours a day for good growth. Secondly, because of that ole tree, you may find you will have to add a really good layer of compost/soil to the existing ground and dig it in (or maybe build it up) for the roses and be prepared to water them well during summer. The roots from that tree will be sucking up a huge amount of moisture.
Love the path! The roses you have chosen are going to look great!

26 Jul '07 6:11 pm You really got us all talking on your first post! I love the pic and the obvious care you've gone to with your preparation, and the result is a lovely, romantic spot. I tend to agree with Pumpkin about extra care for your roses in the shade. Having said that, in a hot climate (like yours/mine) I have found roses can be very happy with somewhat less sun. I in fact have a Cecile Brunner growing up a pine tree in almost complete shade (it got dumped there as a 'cutting' in a nusery area and forgotten. Hallo - next thing there was a rose climbing up the pine. In ten years I've never got round to finding it a better home.
Faith - what a lovely pic of your swing arbour and garden. I love the 'traditional herbacious border' look: big trees on the outside, linear backdrop (your fence), jumble of plants, focal point (arbour). More pics, PLEASE!

Sorry I missed your post Jack
9 Aug '07 4:49 am I didn't catch your post on this thread Jack until today. That picture was taken on the day of my open garden tour and as you can see the grass was looking very sad due to our draught. I posted a series of photos about the tour on my Gardens Through the Seasons thread in the My Garden and Plants section.
