19 Jul '07 10:05 pm IF you suffer from lack of rain or drying winds, here is a tip to help those hanging plants. Incorporate a plastic or pottery dish in the bottom of the container when planting and this will prevent all the moisture from leaching away and will also encourage deeper root growth. If you (re)use plastic seed trays as I do, you will notice that the bottoms are riddled with a mass of holes so to prevent soil and moisture leaking out I line them with newspaper cut to size. Gerry

Good idea.
20 Jul '07 9:18 am The only clematis I've ever made happy I planted an old coffee tin below and just to the side of it so it could get a drink at any time. I can't think why it wouldn't work in a pot. Thanks.

I use that seedtray one for my seedlings. Using quite a few layers of paper stops the little roots from growing into a mat beneath the tray when someone forgets to * them out in time also
edit ~ lol! oh dear is that '*' the net nanny?

Vertical gardening at its' best and great tips in that link The tip suggesting to us to 'cut the liner higher than the compost' is spot on, I always seem to lose mine and most of the water splooshes over the edge...
