Hello, Ellie!14 Apr '07 5:17 pm
Wow! Hardly know where to start...cycads from seeds!! Mercy! Know a bit too much about lugging larger-than-self planties in and out with the weather. Hubband gets vera, vera alarmed when he sees me acquiring large plants. The scoundrel actually threw a party (males only) to celebrate the demise of my 8 ft., fourteen year old Ficus. Have found plant trolleys to be great, and the "roaryer"the casters, the more quickly the kitties get out of the way of monster plants on the attack.
Your statuesque lamp bodies are great! )) And yeah to you and Gordon about those mobiles in "Twister!" Oh to even know where...how....

Old light fitting...15 Apr '07 2:42 am
*his mind starts to wander* Old light fittings are freely available from many junkshops and antique shops (name depending on image projected)...As are many interesting objects that have no more use according to their original intention. Like old radios. Perhaps he can create an 'in honour of Moosey lost-and-abandoned garden radio sculpture' even if it is more Art Deco than Japanese Transistor in style. Mmmm.
Get real, Jack. You don't have the time to weed or even plant. Now you want to start on something new!
Still...

So very nice to meet you, riobrazos, pumpkin and moosey.
Jack ~ Heheh, I hear your wheels turning, creativity flowing.
I sense that there is a story in this "lost-and-abandoned garden radio sculpture",
I must investigate further.
riobrazos ~ I had a powerful déjà vu moment reading about the party
for your dearly departed Ficus.
One of the first joint purchases that hubby and I made (over 30 years ago )
was a Ficus tree. We moved that tree from coast to coast
and back again over the years, and squeezed it (and ourselves)
into some pretty tight accomodations.
It didn't give up the ghost until about 3 years ago,
and we actually did hold a wake.
Thinking back on it, hubby may have been grinning just a bit too broadly.
pumpkin ~ Wonderful that you have such great memories associated with your
gramps' plant. My Big Bird holds a lot of sentiment for me,as well.
In an interesting coincidence, I bought the seeds for it at the same time I bought
those Sago seeds. Both were purchased at Disney World in Florida,
on a trip that my mother and I made together.
My mom is gone, but those plants always remind me of a fun mum and daughter trip.
I've only seen photos of the white birds, they look very elegant,
but I admit that I'm drawn to the gaudy orange and purple combination.
moosey ~ Thank you for your excellent hospitality.
It's becomming clearer every time I have another chance to look around
that I have blundered into a very special place, the site is just beautiful
and everyone's so friendly.

Strelitzia15 Apr '07 7:40 pm
As far as I know there is only a yellow Bird of Paradise flower, not a white. And despite the overwhelming love for Mandela in this country, its rather pale appearance has not resulted in huge commercial success. Here is a good link to an excellent site on it and many other South African plants:
http://www.plantzafrica.com/plantqrs/strelitregmandelagold.htm
The white BoP is most likely Strelitzia nicolai, a very different plant, much more closely related to the banana. It is really not garden worthy, tending to shagginess and often carrying its flowers quite unobtrusively above head height. I've definitely never seen anything near the display in this photo!

"Hubby gets nervous whenever he hears the theme music, he knows that my head will be filling with grand ideas."
LOL! Now where have I heard that before... hmmm...? I have a sneaking suspicion you've found the right forums:)
I'm moosey's eldest son and a search engine specialist in my daytime 9-5 job here in London (I work on the Moosey site in the evenings and weekends) so when someone such as yourself finds the moosey forums from a google search I know I've done a good job.
so.... Welcome to the moosey forums! I look forward to seeing some photos of your garden, now I'm going to switch my computer off and go and sit in my garden and enjoy mine for a few hours

Hi there Eggy! Very happy to meet you.
Ah, then it is to you that I owe my thanks for
the trail of electronic breadcrumbs which led me to
this wonderland called "Moosey's". Many thanks. | Quote: | | now I'm going to switch my computer off and go and sit in my garden and enjoy mine for a few hours |
Yes, you certainly deserve a break, go . . . go relax!
Yes, I think that is just the flower that I've seen the photos of, Jack.
I'd like them in a cut arrangement, very dramatic, but you're
exactly right, not at all as well suited for my garden,
especially as it (like Big Bird) would have to live in a container.
I haven't fallen in love with the Mandela variety, either,
do you know if it was a natural sport, or the result of manipulation?

Hi Zuzu - apparently there were many instances of yellow plants being found, but when bred to 'normal' ones they always reverted. So over several years yellow was bred to yellow before the gene pool was stabilised.

Hmmm
The pic I saw was whiteish with quite a darker creamy-yellow on that lower part, there was no dark or blue in it at all.
I really am perplexed cos it sure didn't look like it had been altered... and I soooo wanted one!
