White Ravens19 Jun '08 4:49 pm
Hey - Thanks, Moosey, for posting the link about the white ravens! Aren't they the coolest things ever?? I didn't think about searching out a link with their picture!
We had a not-so-bad day here today, so I went to the garden to take a few more pictures. Lo and behold, a new iris was in bloom and I found some echinacea seedlings that I thought had died! Here are some of the pics that I took.
Cheers!

Here are the baby Jack-in-the-Pulpit (Arisaema) plants that I've been growing for about 3 years from seed. Perhaps they'll bloom in a couple more years!

Here's a very unusual geranium (Pelargonium) that I found in a garden centre the other day. It SHOULD have green leaves outlined with white, not entirely white leaves! I think I'll call it, "Raven"

The pinkins-purple flowers are the first from the Sanguisorba menzii (Burnet) that I've been growing from seed for 3 years. It's the only plant that survived! The other is a new, to me, iris - no idea what kind!

Gordon, It's just so cheering to see those little bursts of real colour. Cheers, and isn't that white raven a wonderful looking bird! Wow!
Please keep posting - it's so nice after a day surrounded by drab winter colours, and pale sunlight, and... Hey - this sounds like moaning! Oops. I can't wait for the shortest day, cos then I know they get longer. Simple, but true!

Wow the white ravens are very cool - makes them seem less sinister somehow.
Gordon, your Jack in the Pulpits must be very special things indeed - three years and they have two leaves? I LOVE the white leaved pelagonium - I wonder how much sunlight it can take?
Keep the pics coming...

Well, it's all right for YOU to talk about the days getting longer, Moosey, but here they're going to get shorter, and once again it feels like late autumn outside and OUR days are about to begin shortening!! Boo!!
As for the Jack-in-the-Pulpit plants, they begin with 2 leaves and each year the leaves get larger until the tuber underground is mature; then they bloom.
I spent part of this afternoon weeding and pulling out dying bulb leaves left over from early spring - things like tulips, daffodils and colchicums. The garden looks much neater now, but there's still a ways to go!
Don't get depressed with your weather - enjoy the rest and have fun planning for next spring!
Cheers!

Hi, everyone!
Well, I have some happy news today! First, 2 more of my Pacific Coast Iris seedlings bloomed today for the first time, and, second, my home is going on the market on Monday! Woo-hoo!!
Here are 3 pictures of the irises. It was getting dark when I discovered the flowers so I had to use the flash and it changed the colours a bit. The pic with the blue flower was taken without the flash, though, as with the flash, it looked purple! The other 2 pictures are of the same flower - one is a close-up and the other a more distant one to show the subtle differences between offspring of the same seed pod.
There are two or three more plants that should be blooming in 2 or 3 days. One is as tall as a tall bearded iris (about 3 feet!).
Cheers!

These 2 plants both have the same parents; if you look closely, you'll note that the rear one has much lighter yellow petals than the one in the foreground. I'll try to get a better pic. in the morning.

Better Pictures23 Jun '08 11:37 am
Hello again!
Here are the "better" pictures that i promised yesterday. Most of the iris pics are of the same ones I posted yesterday, but taken in full afternoon sunshine this time. The last iris pic. is of a bulbous iris which I can't remember the name of, but I have several of them in pots. I just had to put another picture of the Tradescantia that I posted last week and which Mark kindly identified as "Blue and Gold" for me. Then there's a shot of my prized Japanese Maple bonsai, which I've had for over 10 years now - since it was a seedling.
It's been a lovely day here today, so I've been watering like mad all day!
Cheers!

I am amazed at the huge difference between your iris seed pod siblings - in size, colour, substance, everything! But they're really lovely. You must be very proud - great payback for all your patience and hard graft
