Dixie, I can see now that you can't widen that border because you have a lovely curved grass path. Is the fence curved as well?
My neighbour's Philadelphus grows to about 3m x 3m, but below is what it looks like now, all neat and tidy and no flowers!
No chance of getting sun burn here yesterday. After 28C on Monday would you believe I woke up to snow falling yesterday and than hail and wild winds later on.
I love what you're creating in your garden and thank you for showing us the pictures.

Wow, Dixie!23 Oct '08 2:52 pm
These photos are sublime. zz6 is my favorite with the two phormiums just because these have such great color, and two stands out even more. zz5 is probably the best compositionally and the light is great on all of them. What a pleasing curve that path takes, it definitely leads me to want to follow.

Ah - The Future!!!23 Oct '08 2:53 pm
Hi, Dixie (and Jack - and others . . . );
It was great hearing from you and knowing that all is right with the (gardeners') world!! All I did outside today was to plant some white hyacinths and some pale blue snow crocus bulbs in a wonderful bulb pot that o found at the side of the road yesterday!! Always a scavenger, I am ! Anyway, I planted up the pot and left it in the open cold frame to wait for Heaven to water it, which it's doing right now. I haven't cleaned up the cold frame yet, but plan to do so tomorrow. Mt tomatoes failed miserably this summer so I have to pull up all the dead plants and weed. There's a pretty good crop of parsley coming along for winter use though. There's also something else growing there; haven't smelled it yet to see whether it's dill or fennel. If dill, it can stay. Fennel has to go, as I have a giant purple fennel already.
I forgot to spend my hour snipping pine needles today but tomorrow's supposed to be warm and sunny so maybe I'll get another branch done on the old pine tree! Whenever the job's done, I'll post a picture of it for you.
The lady who owns the house that I wanted up north phoned me the other day to tell me that she's pulling it off of the market for the winter, so it should be waiting for me come spring, if I can sell here then. Wasn't that nice of her? Especially since it's too late in the season for me to move now anyway - snow will be arriving up there any time now, and I don't want an unlivable house at this time of the year.
I really like the openness of your garden, Dixie. I can almost smell that fresh country air from here!! And, Jack, I can picture the new red leaves of your maple in my mind's eye!
Keep on posting, folks!

Hi, Dixie;
Isn't it amazing what a coat of paint can do?? I really like what you did to the flower pots and I think I might use that idea some time (if I ever get a new garden with more room) to colour-coordinate the pots with the colour of the flowers growing in them. I can see wonderful arrangements of potted shrubs or annuals with harmonized or contrasting pots!
I also love the wonderful "springiness" of the pictures of the heifers in the pasture. You know, the special spring green of the new grass, etc. Since it's fall here, it is really nice to get that remembrance of days past and of days to come!!
Enjoy springtime!!

has my nomination for best garden photo in a rural setting. It makes me think of Kiftsgate in England where one could see sheep grazing just below and beyond the lower garden. Here are a couple of photos to show you what I mean. (I prefer your photo to these.)

I too love your photographs looking into the field, Dixie! But ever curious, I must ask: what are the trees across the field? Poplars? And please give us a list of the plants next to the flaxes. What is the yellow plant against the fence? Sundance? (If so it is even lovelier than I thought; we don't get it here.)The purple - a berberis? The smudgy one next to it - one of the nandina hybrids? It really is a very beautiful border looking out over a wonderful view and captured at a perfect moment! Thanks for sharing

What a nice surprise to find all your comments,thank you.
The trees in the distance are poplars,Jack.
On the far left is an Australian Bottlebrush that I bought for Smiley as he loves them.The waxeyes love them too.
Then a tall Hebe that has white flowers.The name of the gold shrub I can't find the label of(grammar !)-it has just started flowering.The reddish -pink foliage is a Coprosma,the other shrub is indeed a nandina.Also a gold Lonicera nitida I think I answered all the Qs.
At the front I have planted some miniature NZ native grasses-must check the label later and post them.Also a couple of miniature roses,including green ice and some gazanias.
