Thankful Gardener

LOL!! Oh Dixie!...that excludes us garderners in Kuala Lumpur...we neither have tractors or white horses?
Ditto everything that Pumpkin beautifully summarizes about your impressive garden, Dixie! Wonderful pictures! My favorites are the pic of your lovely grand-daughter with the cows and 'eastern house 001' with those huge gorgeous hydrangeas! Hippee!...I have one of that now but of course it pales in comparison with yours! Thanks for sharing!

Dixie, your back garden is looking so serene and beautiful. Keep showing us these lovely views. Those of us who have tractor driving men are indeed blessed. We should all give them an extra hug today.

I'm with you Jacqueline, that leaves me out too.30 Apr '07 3:43 am
Oh well my garden is too small for a tractor anyway and if anyone was willing to drive one for me we would no doubt fight over what to do in the garden. I think I'll just keep Lia in the studio, out from underfoot.

My Daphne26 Jun '07 4:19 am
Hi, I'm not sure how this works, my first message board/forum post... I have a Daphne - Evergreen, blooms mid-winter, I've had for about 2.5 years, its my favorite plant in my garden, and its always seemed to be happy and perking along. Lately it looks pitiful, wilted and not healthy, two things that happened I installed a sprinkler system a couple of months ago, and had to move it about 3 feet. but it seemed to handle both events in stride- but then in the last week it started to look pitiful. Can anyone tell me what's potentially going on, and what i should try to save it?

Hi Liz26 Jun '07 5:57 am
I'm no expert on Daphnes and I only grow one, D. X Burkwoodii. I remember being told in a Spring plant identification class that they need good drainage and only moderate water. I have mine sited in a raised bed because I know the clay around here doesn't drain well. I actually have it in what I call my dry garden bed which isn't on any regular irration system. Now I do have a large potted rose nearby which gets more frequent drinks so I am able to give the Daphne more regular water as well. However, it doesn't get all that much water and what it gets drains regularly. Below are a picture showing how it is sited and a detail so you can see if it is like yours.
I suspect that before your sprinkler system went in, your soil was able to drain fast enough to keep the Daphne happy. Now it probably stays moist nearly all the time and that probably is not to your Daphne's liking. Again, this one is the only one I've had any experience with and I do think their cultivation is tricky. Good luck.

This shows the raised bed it grows in which it shares with a Palo Verde tree, convolvulus, some south African bulbs (gone deciduous already) and some succulents. To the left are the potted rose (the dwarf tea 'Baby Luv') and beside it, in the ground, the

A mid-Winter's day.I have just taken two photos of the back where I planted shrubs-not very good light, but I am so pleased at how everything is growing and filling out.The plants are mostly NZ native-hebes,flaxes,and the beautiful pink-red foliage is a coprosma. The tall shrub at the back is an Australian Bottlebrush.

Hi, Dixie-
I like the pictures of your garden; even at this "down" time of the year, there's still lots of colour there! I envy you your phormiums - here the only ones I seem to be able to get through the winter are the tall green and yellow ones. The smaller ones don't seem hardy enough. Same with hebes - only the ones with tiny leaves seem to make it through for me. And as for bottlebrushes, although they sell them here, I've yet to see one make it through! Maybe in Victoria, a hundred or so miles further south . . .
Enjoy the quieter times while they last!
