A breakfast dialogue about the garden with a child...20 Jan '07 10:25 pm
Around the breakfast table, Nicholas (10) with his mama and papa (Saturday morning) :
- Papa : Nicholas, would you like the three of us together going to cinema today?
- Mama (in haste) : I am sorry, but today I will be very busy in the garden protecting certain plants from the coming frost. Late in the afternoon ,if you like...
- Nicholas ( talking to himself, very seriously, like an adult) : The garden of the heart!
- Papa ( wondering..): What is "the garden of the heart"?
- Nicholas ( with surprise) : Why, the garden of a Life!!(Looking straight to me. Me, stunned:) HER Life!
- Mama ( sad) : You are right, Nicholas!! I think, my garden will not have life when I leave. It will follow me...
- Nicholas ( strong voice , bright eyes ) : You are absolutely wrong! I will take over! THAT is for sure!

Hee hee, isn't it wonderful how clearly children see things sometimes?
What a beautiful and proud moment that must have been for you, my dear Liza, and heartening to know that there will be another caretaker for your precious garden to follow on from you (hopefully after a very, very, very long lapse in time!) |

What a beautiful sentiment coming from such a young mind! You are so blessed to have Nicholas in your life at this time. He will keep you young for many years to come; so I don't expect he will have to shoulder the responsibility of your garden just yet. |

Little Nicholas-gardener...22 Jan '07 12:23 am
I am so happy you all shared my deepest feelings for this dialogue! Aren't children amazing?? All teachers/parents are so lucky , being taught themselves so many wonderful things from their students/children! But, even people who are not parents and are/feel close to children, have so much to learn from the children's special wisdom..
As for little Nicholas-gardener, for the time being, the only gardening he does is ...dead-heading the Coreopsis/Tickseed ( actually, all sorts of the adorable golden yellow ones) of the garden!! Which , when they start blooming by the beginning of June, never stop blooming until the end of Autumn, when I cut them back . Therefore, Bravo Nicholas! Dead-heading gardener! |

Such a lovely sharing, dear friend! What a blessed assurance from your loving and brilliant child! Nurture that wonderful spirit and impart your passion before his flame dies out ...autumn is too far away...? |
