I never knew hummingbirds were so tiny! How delicate Faith. Were you timid of holding it? I would have been |

Yes, Pumpkin, I was a little shy about holding him. I was also very shocked that I was to be given that opportunity. I have, however, seen some pictures of a woman who lives north of me in another city who has hummingbirds feeding from her hand. The researcher said I could do that also if I placed something red in my hand along with a container of sugar water and sat very still. I do know that our summer Ruby Throated hummers are not shy about coming up to us. They will sometimes hover right in front of us as if they are curious about us, or perhaps just trying to "psych" us into moving away from their feeders. They are very feisty little creatures. |

Faith, you are so very lucky, to be able to experience such a contact with your hummingbird visitors in the summer! Hovering in front of you! My!
And concerning what you told me before about dreaming, it seems absolutely true, because I had been dreaming myself for many-many years having the garden we have now... Moving from apartment to apartment with my pot garden...and my human and cat families...Because, dreaming of nice things , that are harmless to our fellow humans, is like having positive thoughts/wishes!! When the right time comes, they become true! |

I always liked the song from 'South Pacific' -" Happy talky talky ....you've got to have a dream ..."with delightful hand movements .Something like holding a Hummingbird ..magic !

Dreams and happy thoughts abound.28 Jan '07 7:47 am
I have been out of touch for a day, so it was with delight that I found your replys to my post about wildlife today, Liza, Dixie and Jaqueline. They each brought smiles to my face. I like your little song and hand gesture idea Dixie. Maybe I will try singing to my hummingbirds this summer. It won't be anything like the serious singing that Mary is doing these days, just a little happy melody snippit here and there. |

Now about that much less romantic creature in your garden...29 Jan '07 3:16 am
What a lovely post this has turned into! But I do wonder about crayfish in the backyard... it sounds terribly Alice in Wonderland to me, Faith!
We occasionally find crabs away from the water, especially when it is very wet, but to me crayfish are sea creatures that live below the tide line! Please explain! |

Your hummingbird is a little beauty. I wish we had them here. It must be a wonderful feeling to be able to hold them in the palm of your hand. |
