Colours and Culture15 Dec '06 7:23 am
Different colours will mean different things to different cultures. For example, the association of the colours white, red, and black with weddings, and funerals - different for different peoples. Will these ideas also apply to roses? |

I absolutely aggree. Every culture applies different meaning on each colour . For example, the Buddhist monks wear orange clothes to express divine spirituality , while the Christian monks generally wear black clothes -- there are exceptions with dark blue ( Saint Teresa's Sisters), and light brown ( the Franciscan monks).
And generally, Brilliant Red is fond to extrovert, energetic, emotional people, and generally applies to falling in Love and Joy. The Delphinium Blue applies to Divine Wisdom, Spirituality, and Serenity. The Golden Yellow to Intelligence, Knowledge and Wisdom. The Pure White to Innocence, Purity, Eternity, Divine Spirituality. The soft Pink applies to Tenderness and Affection, Innocence, Purity,...baby girls/children. The Purple is the colour of the Divine. In Greece, the churches are full of light purple colours during funerals (..I hate funerals!). But personally, I never associate my beloved tiny cyclamen(:pinkish purple) cyclamens with this sort of things...And there are other factors that inspire me more in the Roses' world, than the colour of their blooms itself ; for example, the form/shape of the blooms, the way the flowers appear blooming together or singly, the different playful shades of the colour - any colour- on each separate bloom ...The colour of all flower blooms play a major role , on the other hand , in a mixed border -- including of Roses -- regarding the harmonious, colourful whole in the border... |

One thing is for sure: All those colors are beautiful!18 Dec '06 6:52 am
I am sure that different colors have assumed a particular meaning in a culture through the very course of that culture. Certainly we have to think and feel that person we are to gift with a flower before we use any guideline. For instance the yellow rose means different things in Mexico, Germany, and the US. You might get one traditionally for your lover when your relationship falls apart in the first, and in the US they are a "safe" rose to buy for friends of the opposite ***. No matter what, I think that there is some inherent value and meaning for us in the colors brought forth out of the plant world by our flowered friends! Perhaps with the yellow rose example there has been a one-sidedness brought out by each culture, and thus each derives a more specific meaning. But I wouldn't mind getting a rose of any sort of color! They are each so beautiful. It must be more than a little seed that can bring to expression such heart piercing vibrant color from sand, compost, water and sunshine!
