12 Dec '06 1:42 pm Hello again VickyB. To answer your question, I live in a small town near Birmingham. We moved here from North Carolina about ten years ago.
Good luck with the plastic bag idea. It really may not be necessary since the pods look pretty substantial. Keep us posted about their progress.

Welcome Vicky!
14 Dec '06 1:22 am Welcome on board! News from a Portugese gardan sounds like an excellent addition to the mix on the forum! Looking forward to more news, comments and especially pics!
I tried a Google search for "Cobaea scandens" + seed - here are some results - search further and you may find an answer...
Here are my comments:
1) it seems very unlikely to me that a plant can produce two different types of fruit and seeds - perhaps one was not fertilised and the other was??
2) don't wrap it in plastic as it sure won't mature!
3) if you can determine the size of the seed then a plastic netting of a smaller size, tied on as late as possible seems to be the answer IF you find out that it explodes.
Keep writing!

Ola Jack!
14 Dec '06 2:35 am Hello Jack and thank you for your welcome and also for those links ... I did have a chuckle at the third one! In the meantime I have now discovered a total of eight pods. I say pods as they are about the size of smallish plums! Not only that but it looks like there may be many, many, many more developing so I think I'll leave well enough alone as there won't be any shortage of seeds!
My garden may be pretty boring to you as most of the plants that grow here in Algarve come from South Africa! Other plants that do well are Australian and South American species. I'm particularly into vines at the moment.
I've had a quick look at your pictures and just love your aspect and that lovely window ... it's to die for! Sigh! Rather than posting many, many pictures I shall post my garden link up in the relevant section.
Looking forward to chatting and exchanging info.

29 Jan '07 10:07 pm Hello........ my first post!
Thanks for such a useful website, I haven't come across this subject anywhere else.
I'm in London - It's been a very mild winter so far with negligble frosts and the vines are still vigourous and flowering!
The first fruit that appeared on my vine, back in September, is still green four months later. So it strikes me as a good idea to leave some on the plant and harvest a few to put on a warm windowsill.

Cobaea fruit
30 Jan '07 12:25 am Hello richard!
Because of my location mine is fruiting and blooming at the same time!
I belong to a gardening forum in the UK and have posted this there. I appears that it takes months for the fruit to ripen and one of the members of the UK forum does not expect even mine to be ripe before the Spring and apparently yours may never ripen! Just be warned!
I cut one open recently to see what it looked like ...
